Climbing Saebyeol Oreum in Jeju | A Perfect Sunny Day in Korea

🌿 Today, Korean Ajumma is climbing an oreum!

“와, 였늘 날씨 μ§„μ§œ μ’‹λ‹€!”

The day I arrived in Jeju, it was raining.

The sky was gray and cloudy, so I was a little disappointed.
But on the day I was going home, I looked outside and found a completely different Jeju waiting for me.

“Wow, the weather is so nice today!”

I couldn't just go straight to the airport on a day like this. πŸ˜†

So before my flight home, I headed to Saebyeol Oreum.

Saebyeol Oreum is one of Jeju's volcanic hills, located on the western side of the island.

From a distance, it looks like one big, gentle green hill.
But once you actually start climbing…

“Oh… this is steeper than I thought.” πŸ˜‚

그리고 고개λ₯Ό λ“€λ©΄ 정말 νŒŒλž€ ν•˜λŠ˜.

The higher I climbed, the wider the view became.

Every few steps, I found myself turning around to look back. The place where I'd been standing just moments before grew smaller, and the fields and hills of Jeju opened up in front of me.

And above it all was an incredibly blue sky.

It's a very Korean way of describing that wonderfully refreshing feeling when something that felt closed-in suddenly opens up.

Koreans often say it when looking at a wide-open landscape or the ocean—or even when a frustrating problem is finally solved.

Walking back down Saebyeol Oreum, one phrase came to mind:

“μ˜€λ¦„μ€ μ–Έμ œλ‚˜ μ˜³λ‹€.”

Literally, it means “Oreum is always right.”

Of course, we don't mean that an oreum can actually be right or wrong. πŸ˜† In casual Korean, “○○은 μ–Έμ œλ‚˜ μ˜³λ‹€” is a playful way of saying that something never disappoints you.

And on a day like this?

μ˜€λ¦„μ€ μ–Έμ œλ‚˜ μ˜³λ‹€. 🌿

It rained when I arrived in Jeju, but on my last day, the sky couldn't have been clearer.

I came here for work, but for a little while before going home, I got to be a traveler.

Standing on Saebyeol Oreum, feeling the wind and looking out over Jeju, I caught myself saying:

“μ•„, μ’‹λ‹€.”

Ah, jota.

“Ah… this is nice.”

Sometimes, that's all you need to say.
