In Korea, some bakeries are so famous that people travel to other cities just to visit them. Sungsimdang in Daejeon, Lee Sung Dang in Gunsan, and Toujours in Cheonan are well-known examples. Koreans even have a special word for this kind of trip: 빵지순례 (bbangji-sullye) , or a bakery pilgrimage! '빵지순례'는 빵과 성지순례를 합쳐 만든 재미있는 표현 이에요. 맛있는 빵을 먹기 위해 일부러 먼 곳까지 찾아가는 한국의 여행 문화를 보여주는 말이죠. The word combines bbang (bread) with seongji-sullye (pilgrimage). REAL KOREAN #11 · HEALTH CHECKUP 🩺 🌼 Today's Real Korean — 건강검진 받으러 왔어요! 금요일, 건강검진을 받으러 전문 건강검진센터에 다녀왔어요. 한국에서는 대상자에 해당하면 국민건강보험 제도를 통해 정기적으로 국가건강검진을 받을 수 있어요. 저 역시 매달 건강보험료를 납부하고 있지요. 기본적인 국가건강검진 외에도 제가 다니는 회사에서는 추가 검진 비용을 지원해 줘요. 덕분에 더 다양한 검사항목을 선택해 검사받을 수 있었답니다. On Friday, I visited a health screening center for my regular health checkup. In South Korea, people who are eligible can receive regular health screenings through the National Health Insurance system. I also pay monthly health insurance contributions.   REAL KOREAN #10 · MILITARY SERVICE 🇰🇷  🌼 Today's Real Korean — 드디어 전역했어요! 우리 조카가 드디어 전역했어요! 🎉 어제, 2026년 10월 14일. 우리 조카가 18개월간의 육군 복무를 마치고 제대했어요. 군복을 입고 커다란 짐을 들고 돌아오는 모습을 보니 정말 반갑더라고요. 가족들은 폭죽을 터뜨리며 제대를 축하했답니다. ㅎㅎ My nephew is finally out of the army! 🎉 Yesterday, October 15, 2026, my nephew came home after completing 18 months of military service in the South Korean Army. Seeing him return in his uniform, carrying all his bags, was such a happy moment. Our family even celebrated his discharge with party poppers! Haha. 🇰🇷 Why Do Korean Men Have to Serve in the Military? 한국은 징병제 를 시행하는 나라예요. 대한민국 남성은 법에 따라 병역의무를 지며, 병역판정 결과와 개인의 상황에 따라 복무 형태가 달라질 수 있어요. 육군 현역병의 복무기간은 18개월이에요. South Korea has a system of mandatory military service , also called conscription. South Korean men have a legal duty to serve, although the type of service depends on their eligibility and circumstances. REAL KOREAN #08 ·  Beopjusa Temple 🌼 Today's Real Korean — 가는 날이 장날! 가는 날이 장날이라더니! ㅋ 오늘은 가족들과 오랜만에 충청북도 보은 속리산에 있는 법주사에 다녀왔어요. 그런데 우연히 오늘이 2026 법주사 가을 국화 향연 개막일 이더라고요! What a coincidence! Today, my family visited Beopjusa Temple in Songnisan Mountain, South Korea. We had no idea that it was the opening day of the 2026 Autumn Chrysanthemum Festival! 아니, 국화축제를 하는 줄도 모르고 왔는데 이런 행운이! 한국에서는 이렇게 우연히 특별한 행사나 예상하지 못한 상황과 마주쳤을 때 “가는 날이 장날이네!”라고 말하곤 해요. We didn't even know there was a flower festival! In Korean, we have a saying for moments like this: 가는 날이 장날이네! (Ganeun nari jangnarine!) It describes arriving somewhere and unexpectedly finding something happening. October 9 is Hangeul Day , a national holiday in South Korea celebrating the creation and introduction of Hangeul, the Korean alphabet. 한국에는 삼일절(3월 1일), 제헌절(7월 17일), 광복절(8월 15일), 개천절(10월 3일), 한글날(10월 9일), 이렇게 다섯 개의 국경일이 있어요. 이 중 한글날은 공휴일이기도 하지요. South Korea has five national celebration days: Independence Movement Day, Constitution Day, Liberation Day, National Foundation Day, and Hangeul Day.
