My nephew is finally out of the army! ๐
Yesterday, October 15, 2026, my nephew came home after completing 18 months of military service in the South Korean Army. Seeing him return in his uniform, carrying all his bags, was such a happy moment. Our family even celebrated his discharge with party poppers! Haha.
๐ฐ๐ท Why Do Korean Men Have to Serve in the Military?

South Korea has a system of mandatory military service, also called conscription. South Korean men have a legal duty to serve, although the type of service depends on their eligibility and circumstances. For active-duty Army soldiers, the service period is 18 months.

Unlike South Korea, the United States currently has an all-volunteer military. People choose to enlist. The U.S. also has a registration system for a possible future draft, but registering doesn't mean someone has to join the military.

Before my nephew enlisted, our family took a trip to Okinawa, Japan. Looking at the photo brings back memories of our time together. It was a special family trip before he began his military service.

Then came enlistment day. Our family went together to see my nephew off. In Korea, it's common for family members or friends to accompany someone on the day they enter military service.

When someone leaves for military service, Koreans often say:
“๋ชธ ๊ฑด๊ฐํ ์ ๋ค๋ ์!”
It means something like, “Take care of yourself and come back safe and healthy.”

Soldiers can take leave during their military service. Here's a photo of my nephew holding my daughter, Jini, while he was home on leave. He's wearing his military uniform, and she's wearing a little pink dress. I still love this photo! ♡

In Korea, when we see a soldier visiting home, we might casually ask, “ํด๊ฐ ๋์์ด?” — “Are you home on leave?”

And finally, yesterday! After 18 months of service, my nephew was discharged from the Army. He came back carrying several big bags, and we were so happy to see him! Our family celebrated his discharge with party poppers.

“Congratulations on finishing your military service! You've worked so hard!”
In Korean, we often say “๊ณ ์ ๋ง์์ด” when someone has completed something difficult or demanding. It's a warm way to acknowledge their effort and everything they've been through.

Now that he has finished and been discharged from military service, my nephew is returning to everyday life. I'm looking forward to seeing what comes next for him.
