In Korea, some bakeries are so famous that people travel to other cities just to visit them. Sungsimdang in Daejeon, Lee Sung Dang in Gunsan, and Toujours in Cheonan are well-known examples. Koreans even have a special word for this kind of trip: ๋นต์ง์๋ก (bbangji-sullye), or a bakery pilgrimage!
The word combines bbang (bread) with seongji-sullye (pilgrimage). It’s a playful Korean expression for traveling to famous bakeries, sometimes even planning an entire trip around them.

This Sunday, I visited Toujours Bread Oven Village, a popular local bakery destination in Cheonan. We arrived around 3 p.m., and wow… it was packed! I couldn’t believe how many people had come just for bread. ๐
1. Sunday at 3 PM — The Large Parking Lot Was Almost Full!
The first surprise was the parking lot. It was quite large, but almost every space was occupied. At 3 p.m. on a Sunday, it seemed that everyone had the same idea: go out for some delicious bread!
Just looking at all the parked cars gave me a sense of how popular this bakery is. If you’re visiting on a weekend, don’t assume parking will be easy just because the lot is big. It was nearly full during my visit.
♿ 2. Stroller and Wheelchair Access
As a mom traveling with a young child, one of the first things I look for is an accessible entrance. Carrying a stroller up and down stairs isn’t always easy!
At Toujours, I noticed accessible parking spaces, a ramp connecting the parking area to the building, and signs for a wheelchair-accessible entrance. All other visitors were directed to the main entrance.
I can’t say how convenient the route would be for every type of stroller or wheelchair, but I appreciated seeing facilities designed with accessibility in mind.
3. More Than a Bakery — A Little Bread Village
The place is called Bread Oven Village, and after visiting, I understood why. Instead of a single small bakery, it has several spaces where visitors can explore baked goods, enjoy drinks, and spend time together.
Inside, the ceilings were high and the space felt open and airy. People were choosing bread, ordering coffee, and looking for seats. The whole place was buzzing with Sunday afternoon energy.
The displays were filled with all kinds of bread and pastries. I also noticed signs introducing bread baked in a stone oven.
From our seat by the window, we could see rice fields and low mountains. The autumn-colored trees and harvested fields created a peaceful countryside view, quite different from a typical bakery cafรฉ in the city.
4. How Do You Say “Bread” in Your Language?
I found something interesting on one of the walls inside the bakery.
“How do people say bread in different languages?”
The wall displayed words for bread from languages around the world!
(Bbang)
(English) — Bread
(French) — Pain
(German) — Brot
(Spanish) — Pan
I loved seeing how one simple food could connect so many languages. And here’s a little Korean language fact: the Korean word bbang actually has roots in a foreign language!
The Korean word bbang is generally traced back to the Portuguese word pรฃo, which came to Korea through Japanese (pan). It’s fascinating how food—and even the words we use for it—can travel across cultures.
5. The Power of a Local Korean Bakery
Near the entrance, I noticed a sign presenting Toujours as Korea’s No. 2 bakery by sales, behind Sungsimdang. However, this was information displayed at the bakery, and I haven’t independently verified whether it reflects the current nationwide ranking of all bakeries.
There was also a congratulatory display celebrating a baker named a Korea Master Baker Seeing these displays made me think about the baking expertise and reputation that local bakeries can build over many years.
In Korea, it’s easy to find familiar chain stores in almost every city. That’s why I find it special when a local bakery grows into a destination that people are willing to travel for.
A loaf of bread can bring people together and even help put a city on the travel map. To me, that’s one of the charming things about Korea’s bakery culture.
6. A Bakery Pilgrimage Is More Than Buying Bread
Toujours Bread Oven Village felt like more than a place to buy bread. With its spacious interior, variety of baked goods, coffee, and autumn countryside views, it was also a pleasant place for a family outing.
However, it was extremely busy on Sunday afternoon. If you’re looking for a quiet cafรฉ experience, you may want to consider visiting at a different time.
Daejeon has Sungsimdang, Gunsan has Lee Sung Dang, and Cheonan has Toujours. I love how different Korean cities have their own beloved bakeries—and how visiting them has become a travel experience in itself.
