Isn't that interesting? Korea has a national holiday dedicated to its writing system! So, who created Hangeul, and why?
King Sejong the Great — The King Who Created Hangeul
Hangeul was created by King Sejong the Great (1397–1450), the fourth king of the Joseon Dynasty. He ruled from 1418 to 1450 and remains one of the most respected figures in Korean history.

But creating Hangeul wasn't his only achievement. King Sejong also supported progress in science, agriculture, music, and culture, with a strong interest in improving the lives of his people.

Koreans spoke the Korean language long before Hangeul existed. However, written communication relied heavily on Classical Chinese and Chinese characters. There were ways to adapt these characters to Korean, but they were complicated and not always suitable for expressing everyday Korean.

King Sejong was deeply concerned about this problem. In 1443, he created 28 new letters designed to represent the Korean language. He called this new writing system Hunminjeongeum, meaning "The Correct Sounds for the Instruction of the People."

King Sejong created Hangeul in 1443, and the Hunminjeongeum Haerye, published in 1446, explained how the letters were designed and used. What makes Hangeul remarkable is that its original design principles were documented.

Hangeul vs. Korean — What Foreigners Often Wonder
One common question is whether Hangeul and Korean are the same thing. Korean is the language, while Hangeul is the writing system used to write it.
The Korean language existed long before King Sejong. He didn't invent the language itself. He created a writing system that made it easier to write Korean.
❓ Why Are Korean Letters Grouped into Blocks?

Unlike English, where letters are written in a continuous line, Hangeul groups letters together into syllable blocks.
Let's look at an example!
ใ + ใ + ใด = ํ (han)
ใฑ + ใ ก + ใน = ๊ธ (geul)
(Hangeul)
By combining consonants and vowels, we create Korean syllable blocks. This structure is one of the most interesting features of Hangeul for new learners.
❓ Is Hangeul the Only Alphabet Invented by a Person?
Hangeul is remarkable because we know who created it, when it was created, and how its letters were designed. It isn't the only writing system intentionally invented by people, but its detailed historical documentation makes it especially fascinating.
