How Koreans Eat Samgyeopsal (Korean BBQ)

 REAL KOREAN #05 · SAMGYEOPSAL 🥩

Today, I went out for lunch with my family. We had samgyeopsal (삼겹살), one of Korea's favorite foods. We grill thick slices of pork belly right at the table until they're nicely browned.

In Korea, we don't always eat samgyeopsal by itself. A very common way to enjoy it is to make a ssam (쌈). Put a lettuce or perilla leaf in your hand, add a piece of grilled pork belly, ssamjang, and some side dishes, then wrap it all up and eat it in one bite.

Today, I had my samgyeopsal wrapped in lettuce, and also in kkaennip (깻잎), Korean perilla leaves. Kkaennip has a distinctive aroma that goes especially well with grilled pork. In Korean, we naturally describe eating meat this way as “쌈 싸 먹다” — to make a ssam and eat it.
