This morning, Jini woke up with one eyelid really swollen.

I was surprised when I saw her.

“Oh! What happened to your eye?”

Then I looked closely.

A mosquito bite! 🦟

So I said,

“모기에 물렸어요.”
You got a mosquito bite.

“간지러워요?”
Is it itchy?

And of course, she wanted to scratch it.

“긁으면 안 돼.”
Don’t scratch it.

Okay, Jini.

“약국에 연고 사러 가자.”
Let’s go to the pharmacy and get some ointment.

In summer, you’ll hear this word everywhere in Korea!

👉 물리다 · mullida

to get bitten

모기에 물렸어요.
= I got bitten by a mosquito.

😣 간지럽다 · ganjireopda

to be itchy

간지러워요.
= It’s itchy.

💡 Real Korean Tip

The standard Korean word for “itchy” is 가렵다 (garyeopda).

But in everyday conversation, Koreans also commonly say 간지럽다.

This is the kind of Korean you may hear at home!

① 모기에 물렸어요.

Mogie mullyeosseoyo.

Ganjireowoyo.

It’s itchy.

You can also say:

간지러워?
Ganjireowo?
Is it itchy?

This casual form is something a Korean mom might say to her child.

③ 긁으면 안 돼.

Geulgeumyeon an dwae.

Don’t scratch it.

This is a very natural phrase parents use with children.

긁지 마! (Geukji ma!) also means “Don’t scratch!”

④ 약국에 연고 사러 가자.

Yakguge yeongo sareo gaja.

Let’s go to the pharmacy and get some ointment.

약국 = pharmacy
연고 = ointment
사러 가자 = let’s go get/buy
