Jeju Island, Korea | Sea, Hallasan, Oreum & Real Jeju Life

AROUND KOREA #01 · JEJU ISLAND

Yesterday, I came to Jeju Island for a business trip. Jeju is an island off the southern coast of Korea and one of Koreans' favorite places to visit. I'm here for work, but coming to Jeju always makes me feel like I'm on vacation.

Jeju is famous for its beautiful sea, but there's much more to the island. Hallasan Mountain rises at its center, and oreum dot the landscape. You'll also see dark volcanic stone walls, tangerine orchards, and haenyeo, the women divers whose lives have long been connected to the sea.

You can't fit all of Jeju into one story. So today, let's start with seven things that make Jeju feel like Jeju.

As you travel around Jeju, you'll often see stone statues with big eyes and rounded hats. They're called 돌하르방 (dol hareubang). Carved from Jeju's volcanic rock, these statues have become one of the island's most recognizable symbols. Today, you'll see them all around Jeju—from parks and tourist sites to the entrances of shops.

💡 Real Korea Tip

In the Jeju dialect, 하르방 (hareubang) means grandfather. So 돌하르방 literally carries the idea of a “stone grandfather.”

🌊 바다 · bada

Sea

Jeju is an island, so the sea is always part of the scenery. Drive along the coast and you'll find blue water, dark rocks, and small fishing villages. For many Koreans, the Jeju sea is one of the first images that comes to mind when we think of the island.

Hallasan

Hallasan Mountain

At the center of Jeju stands Hallasan, the highest mountain in South Korea at 1,947 meters. On a clear day, you can see its silhouette from many parts of the island. When you're in Jeju, Hallasan feels like the heart of the island.

🌿 오름 · oreum

Jeju's volcanic hills

As you travel around Jeju, you'll notice small hills rising gently from the landscape. In Jeju, these are called 오름 (oreum). There are about 360 oreum across the island. Some are covered in grass, while others are thick with forest.

On this trip, I climbed Saebyeol Oreum myself. I'll take you up there with me in the next story. 🌿

🪨 돌담 · doldam

Stone walls

Walk around Jeju and you'll see dark stone walls everywhere. The island has an abundance of volcanic rock, especially basalt, and people have long used these stones to build walls around their fields and homes. Today, these rough black walls are one of Jeju's most recognizable sights.

🍊 감귤 · gamgyul

Jeju tangerines

You can't talk about Jeju without mentioning its tangerines. During tangerine season, orchards across the island turn bright orange. In everyday Korean, we also commonly call them simply 귤 (gyul).

Koreans often bring home a box of tangerines after a trip to Jeju.

Jejudo-eseo gyul sa wasseo.
“I brought back tangerines from Jeju.” 🍊

🌊 해녀 · haenyeo

Jeju's women divers

Jeju's sea is also home to a very special tradition: 해녀 (haenyeo). Haenyeo are women divers who traditionally dive without breathing equipment to gather abalone and other seafood. They're much more than a tourist image—their work represents generations of life connected to Jeju's sea.

The Culture of Jeju Haenyeo is also inscribed on UNESCO's Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

💛 This is Jeju.

Dol hareubang, sea, Hallasan, oreum, stone walls, tangerines, and haenyeo.

These seven things are only the beginning. Jeju still has so many landscapes, foods, and stories I'd love to show you.

So I won't try to show you everything at once. Let's discover Jeju, one story at a time, with Korean Ajumma.
