Korea’s two major traditional holidays are Seollal and Chuseok.

Seollal celebrates the beginning of a new year in winter, while Chuseok is an autumn holiday that gives thanks for a plentiful harvest.

This year, Jini had a two-day Chuseok celebration at daycare before the holiday.

On Tuesday, the children made songpyeon, the traditional rice cake most closely associated with Chuseok. Jini wore a little apron and head covering and tried shaping the dough with her own hands.

On Wednesday, Jini went to daycare wearing hanbok instead of her usual clothes. With her yellow jacket, red skirt, and little hair ornament, she looked ready for Chuseok.

The children also tried traditional Korean games. They may still be too young to understand all the rules, but touching, playing, and experiencing them is already a first introduction to Korean culture.

Chuseok is also a time for families to share special holiday foods. At daycare, the children tried their own simple holiday cooking activity.

Chuseok is often described as a Korean harvest holiday. Traditionally, it is a time to give thanks for the harvest and gather with family, although modern families celebrate it in many different ways.

Jini is still too young to explain what Chuseok means, but this year she made songpyeon, wore hanbok, played traditional games, and tried holiday cooking. For a young child, culture may begin not with an explanation, but with experience.

In Korea, children may celebrate Chuseok at daycare or kindergarten by making songpyeon, wearing hanbok, and trying traditional games.
