Cheongju, where I live, is an inland city in the middle of South Korea. We don't have the sea nearby, so the ocean isn't something we encounter in our everyday lives. But recently, something unusual opened here: the National Cheongju Marine Science Center.

The center officially opened to the public on September 30, 2026. It is Korea's first national marine cultural facility built in an inland region, designed to give people who live far from the coast a chance to learn about and experience the ocean.

๐Ÿ  I Thought It Would Be an Aquarium

Today, my family and I visited for the first time. Because it is a marine science center, I naturally imagined something similar to an aquarium: large tanks filled with fish and a chance for my little one to see real marine animals up close.

But once we went inside, I realized it was quite different from the aquarium I had imagined. Instead of rows of tanks filled with living fish, much of the ocean was presented through digital displays and immersive media.

To be honest, I was a little disappointed at first. Sharks, rays, and whale sharks swam across enormous digital screens, and the visuals were impressive, but my first thought was still, “Where are the real fish?” I even ended up taking fewer photos than I normally do on a family outing.

๐Ÿ‹ Not an Aquarium, but a Marine Science Center

But after walking through the exhibits, I began to understand that this place was trying to do something different from a traditional aquarium.

Along with the immersive Digital Aquarium, the center also explores issues such as climate change, marine pollution, and resource depletion. There is also a children's area where young visitors can learn about marine waste and why keeping the ocean clean matters.

That made the name “marine science center” make much more sense to me. Rather than being a place mainly for displaying living sea animals, it felt more like a place to learn how the ocean is connected to our everyday lives.

๐ŸŒฑ A More Sustainable Way to Show the Ocean

One thing that stood out was how heavily the center uses digital technology instead of trying to recreate the ocean entirely with live animals. On the giant screens, sharks, rays, and whale sharks swim freely through a bright blue virtual sea.

At first, that felt unfamiliar and a little disappointing. But I also began to think that this might be one way of imagining a more modern marine exhibition. Even without filling the building with live animals, children can still experience the scale and beauty of the ocean—and learn why it needs to be protected.

๐ŸŒŠ Bringing the Ocean to Inland Korea

For a child growing up in an inland city like Cheongju, the ocean can sometimes feel like something you only see when the family goes on a trip. That may be where this science center has its biggest meaning.

It gives people who live far from the coast a chance to learn about marine ecosystems and environmental issues—and to understand that the water we use, the resources we consume, and even the waste we throw away are ultimately connected to the sea.

The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries describes the center as a place where people can experience marine culture beyond the traditional divide between coastal and inland regions, and as a new hub for marine education in inland Korea.

If you visit expecting a traditional aquarium, you might be surprised like I was. Rather than a building full of fish tanks, this is much more of a science center where you see, hear, interact, and learn about the ocean.

Still, I think there is something meaningful about having a place in landlocked Cheongju where families can stop and think about the ocean.

For our family, it became a slightly unusual day out.

We didn't go to the sea, but we came home talking about it.
