At the end of August, our family took a short trip to Buyeo. Some time has already passed, but looking through these photos made me want to share this day. We stayed at Lotte Resort Buyeo, walked around Gungnamji Pond, and visited Buyeo National Museum. I loved every part of this little family trip.

To understand Buyeo, it helps to know a little about Baekje. Baekje was an ancient Korean kingdom that existed from 18 BCE to 660 CE. Together with Goguryeo and Silla, it was one of the Three Kingdoms of ancient Korea. Buyeo was the final capital of Baekje. It was known as Sabi at the time, and Baekje moved its capital here in 538 CE.

For anyone new to Korean history, I made this simple timeline. Kingdoms that existed during overlapping periods—such as Goguryeo, Baekje, Silla, and Gaya—are shown side by side. Buyeo, the city we're visiting today, was the final capital of Baekje.

One of the most memorable places we visited in Buyeo was Gungnamji Pond (๊ถ๋‚จ์ง€, ๅฎฎๅ—ๆฑ ). Its name becomes surprisingly easy to understand when you break down the Chinese characters.

Gungnamji is more than just an old pond with an interesting name. A historical record from 634 CE, during the reign of King Mu of Baekje, describes a pond being created south of the royal palace. Walking around Gungnamji today, it's easy to start imagining what the palace and its gardens might have looked like long ago.

At the end of August, huge lotus leaves still filled the pond, and long willow branches hung over the walking paths. The three of us wandered slowly beneath the trees. Even without knowing its history, it was simply a beautiful place for a family walk. Jini stopped along the way to touch and play with the hanging willow branches.

After our walk, we headed to Buyeo National Museum. Visiting a museum with a young child can sometimes feel like a challenge. But looking back at our photos, Jini seems to have had plenty of fun among the colorful displays inspired by Baekje.

ํ•œ ์œ ๋ฌผ ์ค‘ ํ•˜๋‚˜๊ฐ€ ๋ฐฑ์ œ๊ธˆ๋™๋Œ€ํ–ฅ๋กœ(Baekje Geumdong Daehyangno, Great Gilt-bronze Incense Burner of Baekje)์˜ˆ์š”. 1993๋…„ ๋ถ€์—ฌ ๋Šฅ์‚ฐ๋ฆฌ ์ ˆํ„ฐ์—์„œ ๋ฐœ๊ฒฌ๋œ ๊ตญ๋ณด๋กœ, ๋ฐฑ์ œ์˜ ๋ฌธํ™”์™€ ์‚ฌ์ƒ, ๋›ฐ์–ด๋‚œ ๊ธˆ์†๊ณต์˜ˆ ๊ธฐ์ˆ ์„ ๋ณด์—ฌ์ฃผ๋Š” ์ค‘์š”ํ•œ ์œ ๋ฌผ์ž…๋‹ˆ๋‹ค.

Buyeo National Museum houses many artifacts that tell the story of Baekje. One of its most celebrated treasures is the Baekje Geumdong Daehyangno (๋ฐฑ์ œ๊ธˆ๋™๋Œ€ํ–ฅ๋กœ), or Great Gilt-bronze Incense Burner of Baekje. Discovered in 1993 at a temple site in Neungsan-ri, Buyeo, this National Treasure offers an extraordinary glimpse into Baekje's culture, beliefs, and sophisticated metalworking.

Look closely and you can find a phoenix, mountains, people, animals, and imaginary creatures intricately worked into the burner. It is fascinating to think that such a small object could hold an entire world imagined by people who lived in Baekje centuries ago.

๐Ÿ’ฌ A Little Real Korean from Our Trip

Here are two little phrases I actually said to Jini during our trip. This isn't a Korean lesson—just a little bit of the Korean you might hear naturally when a family is out with a young child.

๐Ÿ‡ฐ๐Ÿ‡ท ์—ฐ๊ฝƒ ์žŽ ์ข€ ๋ด! ์—„์ฒญ ํฌ๋‹ค.

Watching Jini walk through the resort holding her dad's hand, I had a funny little thought. People lived in this city more than a thousand years ago, and today, we're walking through it holding our child's hand.

Maybe that's why I remember Buyeo as more than just a beautiful place. It felt like a day spent walking through one of Korea's oldest stories together.
