How Koreans Talk About Gray Hair: 새치, 뿌염 & Real-Life K-Beauty

 REAL KOREAN #09 · GRAY HAIR & ROOT TOUCH-UPS 🤍

🌼 Today's Real Korean —

When you think of K-beauty, what comes to mind? Glowing skin, endless skincare products, or Olive Young, one of the most popular beauty shopping stops for visitors to Korea?

Today, I want to share a different side of K-beauty. Not skincare or trendy makeup, but something a little more personal: gray hair! 😂

🤍 Why Gray Hair Stands Out in Korea

Most Koreans naturally have black or dark brown hair, so even a few gray hairs can really stand out. They're especially noticeable along the hair part or at the crown of the head.

In Korean, we often call these gray or white strands "새치" (saechi). It's a common everyday word, especially when talking about those first few gray hairs that start appearing.

👩🏻‍🦳 My Gray Hair Story After Having a Baby

I don't remember having this much gray hair before. But since having my daughter and returning to work, I've noticed a lot more of it. My hair used to be so thick, too. These days, even my hair part seems a little wider.

I can't say for sure that childbirth caused my gray hair. Aging and genetics may also play a role. My mom started going gray quite early, too.

Still, sometimes I just want to blame work! 😂 Between raising a toddler and working full-time, life can get pretty hectic.

💼 When Someone Looks Down at My Hair at Work

There's one awkward little moment I sometimes experience at work. When I'm sitting at my desk and someone comes over to talk, they're standing while I'm sitting. Which means they have a perfect view of the top of my head!

And all I can think is:

"Oh no, they can probably see all my gray roots!"

They might not even notice, but I suddenly feel a little self-conscious. Haha.

That's one reason I like getting my roots touched up at the salon. In Korean, we often shorten "뿌리 염색" (root coloring) to "뿌염" (ppuyeom) in casual conversation.

But just two or three weeks after coloring my hair, those little white roots start showing again.

I look in the mirror and say to myself:

"My gray roots are showing again. Time for another root touch-up!" 😂

🛍️ A Quick Trip to Olive Young

But who has time to visit the salon every two or three weeks? Between work and motherhood, even making a hair appointment can be a challenge. This time, I finally got my hair colored after two whole months!

In the meantime, I'd been using gray hair mascara. But when I applied it in a hurry and ran my fingers through my hair before it dried, the color would rub off onto my hands. So I went to Olive Young to look for a gray hair cover-up cushion instead.

Olive Young is a familiar beauty and personal care store here in Korea. I tried a dry powder-type hairline cushion from So Natural, and found it more convenient for my rushed mornings. A pretty good little discovery!

🌿 Cover It or Embrace It?

Then I started wondering: Do people in other countries worry about gray hair as much as I do?

Of course, people all over the world get gray hair as they age. But I imagine everyone has their own feelings about it, shaped partly by personal preferences and culture.

Some people prefer to color their gray roots, while others embrace their beautiful silver strands. I don't think there's a right or wrong choice.

For now, I'm still on Team Cover-Up! Maybe one day I'll happily embrace my silver hair. Who knows? But for the moment, I'm just a Korean mom dabbing a little hairline cushion onto my gray roots before work. 😂

K-Beauty isn't always about looking younger. Sometimes it's just about feeling comfortable with yourself. 💛

  1. Interesting blog! In my country, we call it “white hair.” In my experience, my family and I have always had a lot of white hair. I already had quite a lot when I was a teenager, and so did my siblings. Maybe it really is genetic! We also have a superstitious belief that if you pluck one white hair, more will grow in its place. But now that I’m in my mid-20s, I’ve noticed that I only have a few.

We have the exact same belief in Korea! People say that if you pluck one gray hair, more will grow back. 😂

It's so interesting that your whole family started getting gray hair early. Maybe genetics really does play a big role!

I love discovering these little similarities between cultures. Thank you for teaching me something about yours! 🇰🇷💛
